Ethical, legal and regulatory notes

Ethical, legal and regulatory notes

how will my film impact on the audience. look at the effect on the audience. look at legal issues the film has to address. for example get copyrights permission. age certificate for the film. the BBFC rate the film. British board of film classification. examples from my film on why it is this age

This task is a merit
pick some examples of how people are represent
BBFC and ASA
(advertising standards authority)

1.The product impact and effect on the audience

active
these people questions what they see as they do not copy what they see in media product. all these stunts or violence as they see it as a entertainment this is the theory from  David gauntlet 2007
passive
hypodermic syringe model this is the theory form Theodore Adorno, 1930 the media inject a passive audience with negative messages and values. A mass audience they believe in everything or copy what they see a passive audience gets a effect by the media. for example violence, sexual content. so for example the audience will copy and end up with a negative effect.

explain hypodermic syringe
define passive and active
give two examples of negative impact and positive

2.Relevant issues of representation
All representations are mediated (Hall,1980)
Mediated in media product how people are represented in the film, any stereotype or countertypes for example a women is the stronger then the men. Tessa Perkins 1979 not all stereotype are negative this means they are mainly true or not false.
Talk about the representation of women are they a trigger for male gaze Mulvey 1975 or representation for men (Earp and Kartz, 1999) equation of masculinity with pathological control and violence. so the men in my film show there dominance. (Alvarado (1987) - ethnicity , exotic dangerous humorous pitied. I have 4 black people and mostly white this shows that it represents that there have different culture so they all believe in different culture also the black people speak with an accent

what does representation mean
explain Tessa perkins theory
give examples from my film one positive one negative
are there any countertypes

3.Relevant legal or ethical issues
legal- copyright infringement = when someone uses content like a soundtrack without permission. the consequence of this is that you can be fined or sued. the main worry in the film industry is illegal downloading this will make the film company lose profit as they are not getting the right amount of money for the product.
ethical- offensive material for example there might be offensive language or use of racism also drug use sexual references it might be a religious reason or maybe age. sensationalism this is when it shows violence and gore this is when we have over the top drama. censorship- has the film been censored has any of my film removed or reedited. they would be reference  in the credits in the film.

  • define what copy right infringement is
  • give two examples of what the film would need the copy right for. so would it cost
  • is there any offensive scenes and link it up to BBFC two examples

4.Role of relevant regulatory bodies
who are BBFC look on there website
what is the age range for my film
did the age range get changed at any time?
I it different in the US and why
how does the film keep to the BBFC guidelines it has set for the film? Why is the age been given for this film.

the improved mes en sene and things i need to do

Mise en scene

Mise en scene is one micro element that is encoded into a frame, it is a French word and means “everything within the frame”. I will talk to you about the 5 points and what it did to represent my characters.

Location

In my film at the start the location creates verisimilitude as the birds are there and the forest. I have looked into two of the locations from my film and one of them will be the maze itself. The big walls from the maze connotes a trapped feeling and when the sun goes down it creates a gloomy mood. The second location would be the camp fire the fire is bright and free and the teenagers are chatting and laughing which connotes that the teenagers are having fun and the atmosphere is happy and warm. The location can show what type of people are in my film. This location is organised and very clean this shows that my characters are sensible and mature. This challenges stereotypes because teenagers are usually immature and are not clean. This will effect the audience because when the audience sees that the location is dark and gloomy they will react scared. However if the location in this film has a bright sun then the audiences mood will be happiness. As a customer a watching this film I think that the bit when they are all outside doing their jobs and Kendra comes out of the elevator creates a happy mood.

Costume/make up

The costumes my characters do show the characters personality and where they stand and what they do in the film. The farmers in the film wear farmer’s clothes which do look poor and do not look expensive and the runners wear a t shirt with joggers this represents agility and movement. The costumes can show upper-class and lower-class creating binary opposition. Tomas’s costume shows that he is tired and run down as he is wearing unclean, dirty clothes and doesn’t have a change of clothes. The costume can reflect on the target audience because when the costume is a certain colour it can mean that they are good or bad. If the audience sees that that person is wearing a costume that is blue for example it might mean that they are good and the audiences like that character. In my film Wicked wears black as she is an antagonist and brings badness in the world.

Props

The property of the characters can show power and authority. The props used in my film are very interesting because as Tomas finds a device in the griever, that prop shows the other characters that Tomas has the power and knows what he is doing with in the maze. A prop can show iconography and will be well known with in the film. In my film the sticks in the film what they carry all the time just connotes who is in charge and who isn’t. The sharp sticks show that the film will have fighting so the genre will be action. An icon that is recognized in the film which Tomas finds in the griever which is really important is called an ideologies. Tomas the protagonist is an icon himself as he is loved by many because they would follow him and fight with him. The prop can influence the audience because the main prop can give the audience happiness like, for example in my film Tomas find a device in a griever which gives the rest of the teenagers hope and make the audience happy because the audience is over the moon that they have a chance to escape the maze.

Colours and lighting

The lighting in my film is really good and connotes happiness at the start and creates an equilibrium because the sun is out and they are in a big field. This connotes that these teenagers are free however the colour and lighting can affect the mood and the emotion in the film. There is two types of light (low key and high key) when the sun goes down it creates a low key and creates a gloomy, fear of the unknown and  scary atmosphere but when the sun is out then it is high key and it creates happiness and hope. Low key can be encoded because the shadows of the teenagers. In my film there are characters that are very mysterious and we don’t see much of them they wear black clothing because maybe they have something to hide. Tomas wears light clothes like white which connotes that he represents hope and celebration but also power this creates an enigma. The fire in the camp fire shows happiness. In my film there are many low key moments and this makes the audience feel tense as they don’t know what is in the film.

Gestures

The gestures in my film can effect what genre my film is because if my film has characters which run fast and fight which means it is an action film. As Tomas is new to his surrounding he is not the boss but his gestures can show that he has some sort of power in the group of people. If the gestures from all the teenagers are bad that can create a tense atmosphere but all the teenagers don’t argue or fight against each so it creates a good mood this connotes that they are not stereotypical teenagers this connotes that they are teamwork and one unity. In my film the gestures also can show that some of the teenagers are scared. The gestures can affect the way the audience thinks too and it make the audience think if that character is a protagonist or antagonist. In my film chuck acts brave in one scene but is scared for the rest of the scenes this create empathy for the characters.

The new sound script

My film is Sci-Fi film which means that’s they add diegetic to make it sound futuristic. A diegetic sound is a natural sound you can hear and audience and character can hear it and only small parts of scenes have this in the film I have chosen. Dialogue an important phrase or conversation in the movie for example like “can you tell a bit about yourself, who you are where you came from, can you tell me a name.” this is the first part of the film and states that the protagonist doesn’t know anything about himself. They also us sound effects to make the action film more dramatic when in a chase. They use incidental music to connote emotion a tension.

The denoted is what you see in the film and what you hear. In my film I see loads of teenagers running away from the grieves to escape the maze but the teenager can’t figure out the maze and where to go. Connotation is what it represents. This connotes to the teenagers finding who is behind this disaster and why they have done this. You find this out at the end. In my film Kendra isn’t the usual damsel in distress because she can look after herself and the men in the film worship her as there leader because she knows al Tomas’s secrets and Tom is the leader of the group of teenagers.

Sound

Diegetic

In my film there are plenty of moments when they have diegetic sound in this film. The main diegetic sound that is in the film is the dialogue what the characters say in the film as the audience can here it and the characters in the film can hear it this is all in forma. I can see that Tomas has just entered the glade this is what it denotes “Welcome to the Glade” this connotes the bit when Tomas actually wakes up and realizes where he is and what people are around him this creates an enigma and makes the action film more thrilling. The protagonist in this film talks to people with respect but curios and ask many questions like “what is this place, who put us hear” this connotes that he wants to know and find out why is he in the position but as he talks to other people with respect it denotes a calm environment. The types of moods creates what type of dialogue like sadness, anger and love. Another diegetic sound is when he comes into the glade in the elevator and the elevator doors move and makes a banging sound when just opened this is really cool as it makes a creaking sound this is what denotes but this may connote that Tomas has come into a wold which is unknown for him. The fire throwing is a diegetic sound which starts when they start throwing the fire into the pile of hay to burn the remains of a man who gets bitten by the griever and will turn into the living dead this is what I see and it connotes that if you get bitten by a griever then you will have to die this creates an enigma. Cheering and laughing when around the fire and fighting this is what I see and it means that they are happy and cheerful.

Non-diegetic

The first non-diegetic we denote the bell at the start of the film when he comes through the elevator this is played in the background and added on to create the elevator and tense location. When he comes out of the elevator and doesn’t know why he is there. Another non-diegetic is the soundtrack behind the film to create tension and makes the atmosphere gloomy the music makes the film sound like an action film. The denoted sound from the monsters called grievers and the sound from the machine which opens up to get out of the maze this is all done because to put a sound to the movement in the film this makes a disequilibrium because of the grievers who chance Tomas. The bangs in the film to cut of key points to leave a cliff hanger so you want to know what happens next time they do this to leave you wondering. All of this is done because the producer wants to emphasis the sounds for the audience.

The peer assemsment for meaning and content.

Student Name: Jai Van Der Kraan              Marking work: Jake Fields

What is diegetic sound?

Sound which is natural and the audience and characters can hear it birds in the background Correct

Diegesis the story world Characters dialogue find examples of significant dialogue/sound affects to analyse for their chosen film pre-production/production/post production

What is non diegetic sound?

Sound effects included into the film for example a walls moving this is not natural the actors cannot hear only the audience can hear it example would be soundtrack incidental music very good at creating emotions. Very good at building tension and atmosphere tempo. This is happening in production and post production, production would be for the composer who will write the music

What is the difference between denotation and connotation?

Denotation is what you see and hear but connotation is what it represents/means it has to be relevant to the genre.

Who talked about male gaze?

Laura muvley talked about how male audience watch the film because of one female. 1975 how women look as objects makes woman subordinate attractive.

Life on mars task
Example of non diegetic sounds I hear.
The background music, soundtrack
The wind in the background
talking from the background, voice over (little girl, paramedics)
the buzzing sound
beeping of heart rat monitor
sirens
something is wrong and has ambulance and heart rate monitor to do with emergency
the sound effects emphasis the enigma.

20th century foxes main competitors

Top 3 Competitors

these are links I an look at when I'm doing this subject tomorrow
Walt Disney is one of fox main competitors because like fox they have a lot of power in the movie business and have many subsidiaries like fox also they are always competing for the best awards for certain movies. Walt Disney is based in Hollywood one of the biggest and well known states of America this just indicates why they are so big. Walt Disney is seen as a threat because of the way they produce good films and have great connections around the globe. A certain famous mouse may live in the Magic Kingdom, but he works in Hollywood. The Walt Disney Studios, the motion picture arm of The Walt Disney Company, is one of the world's largest movie businesses. It produces and distributes live-action titles through the Walt Disney Pictures and Touchstone banners, including films from its hit Pirates of the Caribbean series (two of which are among the top ten money-makers of all time). Subsidiary Pixar is responsible for animated titles (Toy Story 3), while affiliate Marvel  creates superhero flicks (Iron Man 2).  The firm also runs Walt Disney Animation Studios and Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment. Other divisions are devoted to music and live stage plays.

After all these years, Leo the Lion, made famous as the MGM mascot that appears at the beginning of MGM films, is still purring along. MGM Studios was once known for popular musicals such as Fiddler on the Roof and West Side Story, as well as classic films such as The Wizard of Oz, Gone With the Wind, Ben Hur, and Doctor Zhivago. Newer films in its library of 4,000 titles include the most recent James Bond film, Quantum of Solace, and The Pink Panther 2. Parent company Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer produces, co-produces, and distributes movies through this subsidiary (its commercial film division), as well as through MGM Studios sister firm United Artists. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer exited Chapter 11 in late 2010.

Want to make successful movies, but don't know where to start? Having three stars in your name might help. Columbia TriStar Motion Picture Group releases about 20 pictures each year through its three studios: the big budget Columbia Pictures (The Karate Kid), genre division Screen Gems (Death at a Funeral), and independent producer Sony Pictures Classics (Whatever Works). Its Sony Pictures Releasing International is responsible for the sales, distribution, and marketing of movies in about 140 countries and territories worldwide. Columbia TriStar Motion Picture Group is the movie marketing, licensing, and promotions arm of Sony Pictures Entertainment.

Competitors

The main competitors for 20th Century fox are Walt Disney Studios, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc., Columbia TriStar Motion Picture Group these three companies all specialize in the same product as 20th century fox. They all specialize in the film making business and are big names all around the world they have subsidiaries behind them like 20th century fox. Walt Disney own more than just movies they have theme parks and they are positioned in some of the best countries also they have wide target audience for children animation. 20th century fox are more well-known for their action movies and the romantic dramas. 20th Century Fox has subsidiaries have done so well they are the ones to promote the film studios and help them get along for example like SKY. The structure of the company is very strong compared to the competitors. The competitors are aimed at mass target audience and produce the films for all the world. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer is known for their great success from James Bond and Wizard of Oz this is a great film and has been known for years.

market position

Three things that could make my company into a good position.

  • The profit they make in one year and over the other companies.
  • The amount of products they make over the year
  • The quality of the product

  • The amount of media they attract and social media
  • profit margin
  • how much did there most successful product make
  • success of there subsidiaries
  • shares (influence)
  • market and advertising (where you se it will tell us about how big the company is)
  • the product they specialize in ( the cost of the film)
  • are they successful national or international (but why)
  • how long the company has been going
  • how are they different to the other companies which are there competitors
  • to show a visual presentation of how it got to the position it is today.
  • how do they operate in relation

Market Position

20th century fox is one of the biggest film companies in the world this has happened by the decision choices the company has made through out here growth and how they did made profit which made them get in to more social media so more people realized who they are and what they do. How much profit they made over the career and what films made them profit. To make a film like avatar it takes a lot of money to produce a film like that. All the cost of Avatar is at $749,766,139 this is a great amount of money and created the most amount of profit when bringing the film out. It made so much money because it was a new idea and had great potential to grow it made the region of 2.7 billion this was their best profit. Another film they made was Star Wars episode 1- The phantom Menace. This was made by 20th century fox and the cost of production is $431,088,139 and this made the profit of 1.7 million. Another film they made was night in the museum this cost of production was low at the budget of $250,863,268 this made the profit of 1.2 billion this just shows how powerful 20th century fox is and how much they make. They make many films each year this means the more they make the bigger there audience is the more talk gets around and more movies they make are seen. The more they make means more profit for them. The quality of their product need to be better than all their competitors because if it isn’t then it cannot beat them for awards and the customer will watch different film produces. They will lose customers and not make profit. Avatar was an amazing film for the quality of their picture and for their story line. The amount of media they attract is up to the company and how much advertising they go for as they have subsidiaries they can promote their film on other platforms. The more advertising the more the media will be interested and the bigger the company can grow. As soon as something happens in the company if media does get to it then it shows that the company is a big company. As 20th century fox is a big company and well-made company and has made many good products they can afford to have shareholders which creates the company revenue because the shareholders see the potential of putting their money into the business. This gives the company good look as big names and other people are making money by their success. The success of their subsidiaries can influence the market position the more subsidiaries the better the options to bring out new product and to promote the company. When there subsidiaries do well for like the example of SKY they can bring good business to 20th century fox. If you go on the TV and see a company advertising like 20th century fox this can show how big the company really is and where it stands in the market position. 20th century fox specializes in films and have great success from doing this. 20th century fox are famous internationally and have reach over to 3000+ cinemas just with one film called Avatar. 20th century fox have been going for 111 years and still counting this just shows how big the company really is. 20th century fox is different to all the other companies because they have a lot of subsidiaries more than the other competitors also they have many good companies to back them 20th century fox has original ideas which haven’t been done before. 20th century fox has their brand in nearly every country around the world and have their name and subsidiaries on nearly every platform also they did this by creating amazing films around the world.
