LO4 Task 5-Ethical, legal and regulatory issues

Hi my name is Jai and in this script I will talk to you about legal and ethical effects that my film does to the audience. I will talk about regulatory bodies such like BBFC and ASA.

1. The product impact of how people are represent

As Theodore Adorno said that there is different types of people who watch this film. These people are called passive, these people believe in the media and copy the media actions which could end up as a negative effect this is called hypodermic syringe another problem with this is that a passive audience could spread the same actions to other for example like violence and explicit language. In my film there is a bit of violence when Gabby and Thomas is fighting this might be copied by a passive audience as they could do negative things. David Gauntlet talks about active audience these people question what they see and do not copy the media product as they see it as a form of entertainment. A positive impact on this is that the active audience will learn from the film another positive is that women will see Kendra as a role model this will help them be more confident in public as she is a strong character.

2. Relevant issues of representation

All representations are mediated this is the theory from Stuart Hall this means that the people in the film are always going to be represented this creates stereotypes and countertypes on purpose. Tessa Perkins 1979 had the theory that not all stereotypes are false as when the girl first enters the glade in my film she is the weakest gladder but as the film goes on she is a countertype because she is starting to take control and women do not take control of men because men like to be the dominant one this is stereotypical. As Kendra first enters the Glade the representation of her shows the Mulvey theory was correct as she is seen as a sex object and creates a trigger for male gaze. In my film there is many men this represents the men as the dominant gender. Earp and Kartz have the theory that the males are the dominant ones in the film. Alvarodo has the theory that the ethnicity has a part in the way the actors are represented. In my film there are 4 black people these are pitied in the film as all the rest of the actors are white. These are pitied because they have different believes and have an accent this may cause the passive audience to react the same in real life and create a negative attitude.

 Relevant legal or ethical issues

Legal

The copy right infringement is one law that you should never break it has serious consequences for example like fined or sued. This is when they use content without permission from the creator for example like a soundtrack which has been used in my film but 20^th Century Fox have paid for the soundtracks for the trailer. They had to buy the rights to use John Paesano music. Another thing that would be copyrighted for this film will be the right to use a certain brand as the brand is on some of their old clothes. These brands and people will be shown in the credits for example like Nike and Whistles.

Another massive problem with in the film business is that people download illegally and abuse the fact you can get films for free. This will make the company lose profit as they are not getting the right amount of money for the product.

Ethical

In my film there isn’t many scenes where there is offensive material. One scene is represents the male actors showing their dominance whilst fighting this will create the passive audience to fight for their status this might be a trigger for bullying. Another is when Alby swears in the film this is offensive material as it could affect people with religious beliefs or do not like that language as they are not the right age because it is unsuitable for them to use or have been brought up differently. This would mean that BBFC will pick on and certify the film higher as there is more offensive material. There isn’t much sensationalism as there isn’t really gory moments or sexual content.

Role of relevant regulatory

The BBFC are the British board of Film Classification. This organisation will rate the film for the amount of offensive material it as in it however the BBFC will look into the type of people who would watch this they would use this information to understand what the age would be for the film. The age for the Maze Runner is 12A this means that 12 year olds and older can watch it, under 12 need to be with an adult. This is the same rating in America. My age rating did not change at all when the production of this film. The reason why they picked this age is that it does have some bad language however it is mild language and the thrilling part of this film is not that scary but does have many jumpy parts in regards to evidence. The film does not include sexual content but does have some violence as it is an action film. Therefore due to the BBFC this film can be distributed to a mass audience.

The ASA are advertising standards authority this company has the power to lay down the rules for the company’s adverts. The social media product is suitable for the audience for example they would look into things that would conflict children and different ages. The types of things they would look out for are alcohol, gambling, motoring, health and financial products. The CAP code applies to viral advertisements so as my film is very big and well known the ASA does look into the trailer if it is suitable for the younger audience and will have a look on the merchandise if it could have an impact on any of the audience. Looking at the posters for the Maze Runner it does look like that none of the posters have an impact on the audience however the characters are mainly male which will effect some people as they would think that it would be sexiest. As the film appeals to a mass audience they have to follow the code for their promotions so then they know when it is right for them to promote and advertise their content. As the cap code is against misleading information the film I picked has got a poster which shows the audience action, in the film there is a lot of action however the poster does show Gally running and in the film he doesn't actually.

Hi guys my Name is Jai I am back again to talk to you about the distribution, promotion and the advertising of my film.

Distribution

Distribution is a technique to get the product out to public this will include transport and promoting the product to the public. One way is to use promotion so the public will know about the item. The more promotion the more revenue the company makes. My film producer will have enough from their subsidiaries to promote the film and they spend 10% of their money on promotion. My film has been impacted by technology convergence because it has helped the film be bigger and stand out against competitors also there are more ways of viewing my film in digital form for example cinema, TV (sky), streaming (Netflix) and DVD. This makes the film cheaper for the audience and more accessable. The converged technology for my film is like the internet where you can go a view the film, you can watch this film on nearly all devices. I do think that the converge technology does help as the sales for this film has been massively increased also the amount of people watching this has been massively improved. The revenue made for this film is very successful the figures show that a lot of people have watch the film using downloadable content. The new technology has made it cheaper for my company to put the Maze Runner in the cinema because all they have to do is to get a hard drive which will stream for the film to be watch by the audience and will cost only £100 because in the old times they used to use film reels which would cost £10,000 just to get one in a cinema and show the film.

This is because that technology makes it cheaper for people to buy. You can view my film very easily on many devices. The Maze Runner is made on Blu-Ray, DVD and been on streaming websites. As consoles have the ability to have Blu-Ray these devices are very multi-functional and are able to get the film on Blu-Ray and streaming websites. These figures show that the film was a real success as the technology has made it more popular.

Advertising

My film is shown on many platforms as the promotion technique will be done on billboards and advertised on the TV adverts even in the cinema. Another one is on the trailer for YouTube videos. Another way that the film will be shown is the radio. The film will be advertise in one trailer this is to make awareness that this new film is coming out another way they can promote their film is to get it into magazine which are published every weekend. The film is marketed with many different techniques. The films merchandise like posters can be a good way of promoting the film. The audience will create a talking point and people will want the watch it has a lot of people taking about also social media when people go to a see the film they will post it on to the social media so it attracts more people like Facebook. This film will be marketed on new media as it will all be done by using technology. This will attract a mass audience. The revenue for this film is a lot and they did this because of the TV network as they are all promoting the film n their film section for example like SKY movies. 20th Century Fox has used cross media platforms so they can attract mass mainstream audience. 20th Century Fox has subsidiaries so they use them to promote the film. The audience will help the promotion for this film as they buy the product which have the film advertised by this it makes them show their friends and help the company promote. The Maze Runner appeals to the mass audience and will use all types of promotion as they focus on mass mainstream audience. The rise of the popularity of the Maze Runner is mainly because of technology convergence. This is mainly because of the social media promoting the film on the web 2.0 this create the mass audience to be able to see this content. The trailer will be imported to the web and shown on Facebook and Twitter and other social media websites and will be watch by many. As 20^th Century Fox have many films out one way of them promoting there film is to use trailers in the cinema. The Maze runner was shown in nearly all cinemas. This will promote the media product.

What can I say? I LOVED this film.
So the film is a very pleasant, well-paced, well directed, reasonably well acted, and decently scored, great. Well, nice CGI, entertaining film that will please just about every audience there is, without being horribly commercial, soppy and cliché.I haven't had this much fun in a long while.

This is a positive sign as this shows that the technology has made is available for every audience and it will please all people. This film brings fun to people lives with the technology convergence it makes it available for people to review and put their opinion to many all away around the world. This is all because of technology convergence.

Audience profile

Introduction

Hi my name is Jai  I am making this script to Identify my target audience for the maze runner I am going to talk to you about what type of people who watch my film and why they like it I will look into demographics and what groups of audience would like my film. As John Hartley and Ien Ang says that they made an imaginary entities before creating the media product. This means that they have a brief idea on who the audience will be before the film is made so then they know who to target the film at. My age for my film is 12A but I think that it would appeal to 17 to 20 year olds because the books are out and they would understand the storyline.  The type of people who would be interested in this film are people with sporty life and love action. My median age for the maze runner is 17 as people younger will watch this film too but 17 year olds love going to see it with all their friends.

My Imaginary entity

This is Liam he loves to be fashionable but really he is a big softy. His life consist of gaming and a cheeky Nandos with the lads but is favourite hobbies is to illegally watch films from the internet and watch action films. He read all three books off Maze Runner and is a massive fan boy of the characters. He literally has fantasy dreams about Kaya Scodelario and how she runs through the field away from the griever and he’s the protagonist to save her. He loves his music and he is as obsessed as a women with his shoes. He loves X Factor even though it is out dated and owns a mainstream iPhone and when his friends are doing work he is usually messing around in the theme park.

At the very start of the film when Tomas first enters the glade it denotes just male teenagers in the glade at the moment. This is a part shows that the film will be mainly made around males and action this is stereotypical because mainly male do action. Tomas is the role model for the audience. My second clip is a clip with action in it as many males like the action films as they are thrilling to watch and wish they can do those stunts. This clip is Tomas running away from a Glader through the forest to get away from him because the Glader has been stung by the griever and is trying to kill Tomas this is the disequilibrium in the film. Most of the actors are teenagers so it could appeal to the audience and create ideal self but a male audience like a problem in the film. I have chosen this clip because it shows the males do like some drama in there film as in this clip Tomas and Gally are fighting against the fire and showing their dominance with in this clip he then remembers his name this and solves the enigma. The dominance can relate to males because they like to be the dominant one.

Another clip I found Tomas finds himself jumping in mid-air to get to the other side away from the griever and then goes through a gap and the griever follows him and dies by the maze closing in. The male audience likes this because it is thrilling but they also like it because it shows guts by Tomas to jump off the high fall.The male audience like that there is girl in this and really good looking girl this creates male gaze as they watch the film but there main point of interest is at the girl as she is good looking and a dream girl for many men.

One clip that represents my age is the first scene when he is stuck in the lift this is scary atmosphere this is too scary for a young audience as it is dark and unknown. This clip is appropriate for the median age as the age will not be scared at the start and will understand the storyline the age of the actors can appeal for the audience as they are the same age.

Another clip is when Tomas first meets the girl and it creates male gaze she really pretty the median age will understand the storyline but younger audience wouldn’t they would be more concentrated on looking at the girl however the teenagers will act like the girl is a role model for them or an ideal partner.

As Tomas gets stuck in the maze there is a bit when the maze becomes really scary and the griever is chasing Tomas this is when the griever dies this shows that the teenagers can look after them self’s and defeats stereotype. In the background they use CGI and my age audience have been brought up to be digital natives.

The death of Chuck I really sad but I think that a younger audience would not understand the meaning of his death and the importance of his survival because they wanted him to survive and get to his parents. He sacrificed his life for Tomas which may be understood by an older target audience.

User and Gratification

Denis McQuail, 1972 created a theory that people would watch media product to serve a purpose and to help them in their day to day life’s he said that there is four reasons why people go and see the films. One of the is escapism this is when the person who goes and sees the film will want to forget about all the problem  in their lives and just enjoy a good film it will help them go in to a different world. In my film this is shown because the audience can immerse themselves into the film and have the feeling that they are I the film. This is shown in the maze runner as it helps the audience because it is a different location and a fictional world. Another example I have is building a personal identity this is shown as the audience will classify them self’s into a category. The film shows the audience what the teenager’s life is like when they are growing up. The actors share the same interest as the audience because the audience will have the same fashion and hobbies.

The lifestyle that would watch my film are urban ventures these people are teenagers and they like my film because it has lots of action in it this shows building personal identity this shows the teenagers what type of category you class yourself in. They should be in the action category. These people will like to do sports but mainly free running as it dos show a lot of it in the film. Another thing that the teenagers would like in this film is that there are male actors which the female teenagers would like as an ideal partner. Also the male audience would think that the actors are role model as they are mainly male. The teenagers might watch this to have a talking point. In my film there is many teenagers this would appeal to them because they are the same age and will live their lifestyle they will go through the same moods. Some teenagers would like to find information about the actors this is called surveillance because they are their role model and a star persona. The stars in my movie that act are Dylan 0’Brien, Will Poulter and Thomas Brodie-Sangster.In my film there isn’t explicit language so it would appeal to settled suburban this is ok for kids to watch because they like the action but the family would have to watch it with them this will help the settled suburban’s have escapism because they can get away from all their problems.Nest builder wouldn’t mind watching this as it is something to watch for entertainment they would watch this because it has action in it. It is escapism for them so then they can relax and get away from all the problems of starting a new home.

I have also chosen middle class because they might just have read the books so it could mean that they would like to watch the film the middle class people have the money available to do this. As they have only a bit of disposable money.

Lower middle class will have the money to watch this film these people settled and happy have a family which will mean that kids will watch the film but still be able to find time for escapism.

Upper middle class have the time to watch the film. This means that they could watch the film at any time they want. These people have the ability to buy all books and the films and watch it on TV with film channels. They might live in the city for their job but own a company and have the money to go probably see the first showing.

Middle class probably own a movie subscriptions they would also live in a nice house in the country side and be able to travels to the cinema easily by car because they have the money to spend on these luxury items. These people could afford the game for this film as they have the disposable income to be able to do this.

LO1: Task 2 – Textual analysis of Maze Runner

Introduction

Hi my name is Jai and I have chosen maze runner to talk to you about and how the film was made.

Purpose

The purpose of this film is to provide entertainment to your screens at home and in the cinema. In the film the most entertaining bit is when he learns the maze and getting chased by grievers who want to kill him. This film has been made to entertain the audience to bring a new idea to the screens and because the company has the money to do this work. They make the film to aim at a mass audience. The film I picked was made to make profit because they are a conglomerate.

Genre

Daniel Chandler (2001) stated that genre means type of category. My genre of my film is action and thriller this makes it a hybrid this means it has to genres put together and it is a sub-genre this means it is genre in a genre =this is what Barry Keith Grant (1995) said. The genre is aimed at people who like the concept of chases and crazy thriller parts the film has some jumpy bits in it which scare the audience.

Form

My film is 113 minutes long this makes it a feature film because it is long.

My film has been distributed in many places like TV, DVD, Cinema and Downloadable content.

SKY movies does show this on TV and Cinemas like Savoy, Cineworld, Odeon, View

Style

My film looks futuristic as it has many special effects. It does not create verisimilitude and they do this because of the way they made the film. the film looks futuristic when all the walls move and when they finally get out of the maze it looks post-apocalyptic and has giant skyscrapers which look very creative and all the technology they use in the control room looks really new but complicated.

Content

The narrative of this film is all about one boy who can change the world and help the Red army succeed against Wicked the enemy. There are 5 key stages in a film.

According to Todorova in 1977 my film starts with a disequilibrium and they have to solve it out but there are bits where we do see that they are sorting things out but there is always another disequilibrium which ruins the resolution and they have to solve the problem out again. The film I am watching ends with a disequilibrium and this means that there will always be a sequel. Kate Domaille there are 8 types of narrative I have two types of narrative in my video. I have Candide this is based on one man and how nothing can stop him this happens in the film with Tomas and there is a love story between Kendra and Tomas which make it a type of narrative called Cinderella. Claude Levi-Strauss from (1958) Levi-Strauss argued that all narratives could be reduced down to binary opposites. For example like male and female like in my film Kendra is in charge of Tomas and bosses all the other characters around this means Kendra is the dominant one and Tomas is the subordinate. This situation is not stereo typical. The young in this film are more important than the old because they can save the future.

Meaning and content

My film is Sci-Fi film which means that’s they add diegetic sound to make it sound futuristic. A diegetic sound is a natural sound you can hear and audience and character can hear it and only small parts of scenes have this in the film I have chosen. Dialogue an important phrase or conversation in the film for example like “can you tell a bit about yourself, who you are where you came from, can you tell me a name.” This is the first part of the film and states that the protagonist doesn’t know anything about himself. They also us sound effects to make the action film more dramatic when in a chase. They use incidental music to connote emotion a tension.

The denoted is what you see in the film and what you hear. In my film It denotes many teenagers running away from the grievers to escape the maze but the teenager can’t figure out the maze and where to go. Connotation is what it represents. This connotes to the teenagers finding who is behind this disaster and why they have done this. You find this out at the end. In my film Kendra isn’t the usual damsel in distress because she can look after herself and the men in the film worship her as their leader because she knows all Tomas’s secrets and Tom is the leader of the group of teenagers.

Sound

Diegetic

In my film there are plenty of moments when they have diegetic sound in this film. The main diegetic sound that is in the film is the dialogue what the characters say in the film as the audience can here it and the characters in the film can hear it this is all in forma. I can see that Tomas has just entered the glade this is what it denotes “Welcome to the Glade” this connotes the bit when Tomas actually wakes up and realizes where he is and what people are around him this creates an enigma and makes the action film more thrilling. The protagonist in this film talks to people with respect but curious and ask many questions like “what is this place, who put us hear” this connotes that he wants to know and find out why is he in the position but as he talks to other people with respect it connotes a calm environment. The types of moods creates what type of dialogue like sadness, anger and love. Another diegetic sound is when he comes into the glade in the elevator and the elevator doors move and makes a banging sound when just opened. This is really interesting it makes a creaking sound this is what denotes but this may connote that Tomas has come into a world which is unknown for him. The fire throwing is a diegetic sound which starts when they start throwing the fire into the pile of hay to burn the remains of a man who gets bitten by the griever and will turn into the living dead this is what I see and it connotes that if you get bitten by a griever then you will have to die this creates an enigma. Cheering and laughing when around the fire and fighting this is what I see and it means that they are happy and cheerful.

Non-diegetic

The first non-diegetic we denote is the bell at the start of the film when he comes through the elevator this is played in the background and added on to create the elevator and tense location. When he comes out of the elevator and doesn’t know why he is there. Another non-diegetic is the soundtrack behind the film to create tension and makes the atmosphere gloomy the music makes the film sound like an action film. The denoted sound from the monsters called grievers and the sound from the machine which opens up to get out of the maze this is all done because to put a sound to the movement in the film this makes a disequilibrium because of the grievers who chance Tomas. The bangs in the film to cut of key points to leave a cliff hanger so you want to know what happens next time they do this to leave you wondering. All of this is done because the producer wants to emphasis the sounds for the audience to connote emotion.  

Mise en scene

Mise en scene is one micro element that is encoded into a frame, it is a French word and means “everything within the frame”. I will talk to you about the 5 points and what it did to represent my characters.

Location

In my film at the start the location creates verisimilitude as the birds are there and the forest. I have looked into two of the locations from my film and one of them will be the maze itself. The big walls from the maze connotes a trapped feeling and when the sun goes down it creates a gloomy mood. The second location would be the camp fire the fire is bright and free and the teenagers are chatting and laughing which connotes that the teenagers are having fun and the atmosphere is happy and warm. The location can show what type of people are in my film. This location is organised and very clean this shows that my characters are sensible and mature. This challenges stereotypes because teenagers are usually immature and are not clean. This will effect the audience because when the audience sees that the location is dark and gloomy they will react scared. However if the location in this film has a bright sun then the audiences mood will be happiness. As a customer a watching this film I think that the bit when they are all outside doing their jobs and Kendra comes out of the elevator creates a happy mood.

Costume/make up

The costumes my characters do show the characters personality and where they stand and what they do in the film. The farmers in the film wear farmer’s clothes which do look poor and do not look expensive and the runners wear a t shirt with joggers this represents agility and movement. The costumes can show upper-class and lower-class creating binary opposition. Tomas’s costume shows that he is tired and run down as he is wearing unclean, dirty clothes and doesn’t have a change of clothes. The costume can reflect on the target audience because when the costume is a certain colour it can mean that they are good or bad. In my film Wicked wears black as she is an antagonist and brings badness in the world.

Props

The property of the characters can show power and authority. The props used in my film are very interesting because as Tomas finds a device in the griever, that prop shows the other characters that Tomas has the power and knows what he is doing with in the maze. A prop can connote iconography and will be well known within the film. In my film the sticks in the film what they carry all the time just connotes who is in charge and who isn’t. The sharp sticks show that the film will have fighting so the genre will be action. An icon that is recognized in the film which Tomas finds in the griever which is really important is to the narrative. Tomas the protagonist is an icon himself as he is loved by many because they would follow him and fight with him. The prop can influence the audience because the main prop can give the audience happiness like, for example in my film Tomas find a device in a griever which gives the rest of the teenagers hope and make the audience happy because the audience is over the moon that they have a chance to escape the maze.

Colours and lighting

The lighting in my film is really good and connotes happiness at the start and creates an equilibrium because the sun is out and they are in a big field. This connotes that these teenagers are free however the colour and lighting can affect the mood and the emotion in the film. There is two types of light (low key and high key) when the sun goes down it creates a low key and creates a gloomy, fear of the unknown and  scary atmosphere but when the sun is out then it is high key and it creates happiness and hope. Low key can be encoded because the shadows of the teenagers. In my film there are characters that are very mysterious and we don’t see much of them they wear black clothing because maybe they have something to hide. Tomas wears light clothes like white which connotes that he represents hope and celebration but also power this creates an enigma. The fire in the camp fire shows happiness. In my film there are many low key moments and this makes the audience feel tense as they don’t know what is in the film.

Gestures

The gestures in my film can effect what genre my film is because if my film has characters which run fast and fight which means it is an action film. As Tomas is new to his surrounding he is not the boss but his gestures can show that he has some sort of power in the group of people. If the gestures from all the teenagers are nervous that can create a tense atmosphere but all the teenagers don’t argue or fight against each so it creates a good mood this connotes that they are not stereotypical teenagers this connotes that they are teamwork and one unity. In my film the gestures also can show that some of the teenagers are scared. The gestures can affect the way the audience thinks too and it make the audience think if that character is a protagonist or antagonist. In my film chuck acts brave in one scene but is scared for the rest of the scenes this create empathy for the characters.

Shot types

There are many types of shot types and they all connote different things I have gone through my film picking the right ones to talk to you about. I have picked two types of shots what are from my film and I have chosen a close up onto Tomas face this is done to emphasis the emotion he is expressing. When it does go up for a close up this connotes that Tomas is confused and scared because he just entered the Glade which is an unknown location for him. The close up really does show the relationship between the characters also it will involve the audience in the scene this create spectacle. My second shot type will be the one what looks over the whole maze this is a establishing shot and it identifies the diegesis an create the atmosphere. This denotes that they are trapped in 4 walls and behind each wall there is a complicated maze. This connotes that the teenagers have to use their knowledge to try and get out of the maze this creates a disequilibrium at the start of the film.

Angles

The angle the camera is really important as it can create binary opposition or the male gaze. In my film the camera positioned at a high angle which denotes that he is in an elevator on the floor shuffling around and shouting help this connotes his subordinate and weakness because as the camera is pointing down at him it connotes that he is scared of this new place called the Glade. This makes the audience think that Tomas is weak and just looks like fresh meat for the others to pick on. The other camera angle is the low angle this is usually used on the dominant person to show the audience that he has more power than the other character in the film. In my case Alby is looking down at Tomas because he is more dominant. This connotes that Alby is more important and knows what he is doing when in the glade. The audience sees Alby as friend because he does not represent himself to be horrible. The low camera angle is positioning up always and you can see all of Alby . In some cases like when Gally pushes Tomas down to the ground which causes a disequilibrium and they use a low camera angle on Gally.

Movements

At the start of the film Tomas runs away from the elevator and tries to get away from all the teenagers. As Tomas runs away the camera is positioned next to him and stays next to him showing all the movement and the action . This denotes him running through grass really fast and falling over. This connotes the action and danger in the film. With doing this the audience can feel like they are in the film and actually part of the adventure and wouldn’t mind being him as he acts like a role model. Another movement is the tilt movement in my film it is used to introduce the diegesis to the film and then it tilts back up to facing Tomas. This denotes that Tomas is in the Glade and walking around and seeing the scale and mass of the Maze. This connotes that he want to know what is out in the maze. This makes the audience feel like they want Tomas to explore the open maze. The tilt does exaggerate movement and action. It does the tilt again to introduce the diegesis when Tomas goes for fertilizer in the woods.

Focus

In my film there are many scenes which the camera does only focus on one character to emphasise how important that character is but some scenes focus on everything because it means that everything that is in the frame is important. In my film I have picked one main focus point and it is when they are all near the camp fire. When all the teenagers are there then it focuses on all of them because they are all part of the Glade and important. There is another focus point when they set the wood on fire because the other characters are out of focus and the fire is the main point of interest. In this scene the lighting is low key which means the camera really needs to capture the light from the fire to focus on the main characters. This connotes that the fire is the reason for happiness and bond but also means that they are a team. The audience sees this as a happy atmosphere an there is no tension near the camp fire.

Editing

Shot reverse shot structure

This consist of when two characters are in conversation and they are taking between each other and the camera cuts between each person when they start to speak to carry on the narrative. It is juxtaposed when two images create a link between them. I see this happen in my film between Alby and Tomas this is at the start of the film when they talk about the area and what rules are put in place for the Glade. He starts by saying “there are three rules, one never harm another Glader, do your work and never go beyond them walls” Tomas replies with “why what’s out there?” this creates a disequilibrium because Tomas is interested in the Maze. The shot types used in this are over the shoulder and close up the scene cuts 5 times in-between this conversation because when the character is speaking the audience feels like they spectates and part of the conversation. When Tomas and Alby talk it denotes that Alby has been in the Glade for longer and is the dominant one and they are just having a normal conversation. This connotes that Tomas is curious and interested in the place he has just arrived. This could also connote binary opposition because Tomas does not know Alby and knows that he is keeping the Maze Secret away from him which may mean that Tomas could have something against Alby. Another Example of shot reverse shot structure this happens in the middle when Tomas is checking out the maze and Gally pushes him to the ground this creates binary opposition and the camera angle is low for Gally because he is dominant and high for Tomas because he is weak and the shots change because they have a conversation.

Action Match

An action match is where an action began in one shot and is completed in the next shot which has been cut. In my film there is a part when Tomas jumps off a wall to get away from the griever this is split into two shots and has been cut twice. As Tomas jumps it denotes that he has to get away from the griever. This connotes that the griever wants to kill him and Tomas will do anything to get out of its way this creates disequilibrium. The action match happens when he is about to jump then cuts over to when he lands. There is a medium long shot used in this part then goes to a medium close up to show emphasis the action and his emotion when he is there. The action match happens again when he run through the field to get to the other Gladers the first shot type is when he starts running and is a establishing shot then goes straight into a close up when he falls over and hinds away from the griever. This makes the audience scared that the griever will get him and create tension in the atmosphere this challenger stereotype as the male is scared and males are usually the strong and brave.

Cross Cutting

Cross cutting happens when the scene cuts over to another location, another word for this is parallel editing. It happens between two or more narrative events that are occurring in different place usually at the same time. In one of my scenes in the movie there are the total of 4 cross cuts this happens when Tomas explores the maze for the first time to go and look after Alby. As the griever gets closer the tension rises and creates the audience to feel nervous. 20^th century fox use cross cutting to be able to get the scene in two location and to leave the audience wondering what happened with Tomas and Alby. This denotes that Tomas has to be brave and runs through the maze away from the griever. The cross cutting connotes that all the other Gladers are scared for Tomas and Alby while Tomas is the protagonist. This also creates an enigma because he broke the rules and went out in the maze. The first cut is when he runs through the maze and the then it cuts to the other Gladers and they are amazed that Tomas just made the decision to go into the maze on his own. It then cuts back into the maze where Alby is stuck because he was stung by the griever. Then it cuts to the Gladers again and they are discussing if they will stay alive all the night. This makes the audience wonder what would happen to Tomas and if he really does survive the night. The last cut is back to the maze and shows Tomas doing a plan to hide Alby from the griever. The shot types that have been used are establishing shot and medium long shot also close up these were used to show emotion and emphasis the action.

Insert shot

An insert shot is a close up shot designed to draw the audience’s attention to something that was only a part of the previous shot, this is also to focus into a prop. This is used to identify the iconography. Always from a wide shot to a close up. This connotes the importance of the prop because it is the main iconography this may be used with shallow depth and the deep depth to get the right focus. In my film Tomas and a couple of other Gladers go out to find the dead griever that he has killed. The iconography of this scene is the device they pull out of the griever’s brain. This medium long shot captures the characters feeling this frame is all in focus because everything is important but when they look at the device it goes to an extreme close up and the back ground goes out of focus to analyse the main iconography. This device becomes automatically an important feature to the film. This is when the insert shot is made so then the audience can view the iconography. The audience feels like they have a connection to this device and this scene denoted that the Gladers have just found hope and happiness from this device and maybe a way out. This connotes that the Gladers have found a protagonist for their disequilibrium and solves the enigma.

Eye line match

An eye line shot will always include a point of view shot / perspective. This type of editing is can be done by starting with a close up shot then goes to a wide shot. This may involve the character and what they see this makes the audience feel like they are in their shoes bat they want to be them because that character is their role model. Then it could go in to an action shot. In my film Tomas sees the griever from around the corner  and runs at it with anger and a spear this shot is all a close up and it makes the audience feel like they are in that position and actually apart of the action but then goes to a wide shot when they hit the griever. This denotes that the griever is getting attacked by the Gladers and they are making a stand. This connotes that the Gladers are getting their anger out and winning the battle against the griever for their freedom. When they do this they solve a disequilibrium and creates binary opposition because the Gladers know that they can defeat the Grievers which is the antagonist.

Production Process

Pre-production

I have picked two examples of pre-production from my film one example is the script and it was written before the actual production started. This is done in pre-production because then the actors in my film know what to say in the scenes chosen also they need this script because then they know how to react and what gestures and how to act. This will create the actors the show emotion. Another part of pre-production is the casting and it takes plenty of time to scout the correct actors for this film. For my film they had to find actor which will be a role model and look young. They managed to get plenty of actors to provide the correct content. 20^th Century Fox managed to scout Dylan O Brian, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Kaya Scodelario and Will Poulter all these actors have had great experience in acting because they have been in many big films. Therefore would attract a mass audience.

Production

The production of my film takes time as there is a lot of thinking to it because they film the scenes. When 20^th Century Fox film these scenes it takes many tries to get the correct scenes. This takes time because when thy record the scenes they need to create the best emotion also when they record the scene the actors need to be in the correct position. Another part of the production is the chrome key which is green screen this is when they create the atmosphere behind the actors and edit the location. With a chroma key they can create the location to look verisimilitude or to make it futuristic this is done all the way through but on main part is when Tomas has entered the maze. The location will help the actors create the mood.

Post-production

In my film post production is done when they add in music to the scenes to create mood and tension also they do this to make the feeling of action more thrilling. In my film they add music to the scene at the end to block out the dialogue and to show the emotion of Tomas when Chuck dies. Another part of post-production is the trailer they make this trailer to promote the film and to show the audience a taste of the film it shows them what it is going to be like.

Ending
